Our Lady of Fatima Hospital has introduced a remarkably accurate, robotic arm-assisted surgical procedure for partial knee replacement, total knee replacement, and total hip replacement. Fatima is the only hospital in the Providence metropolitan market to make this available.

 

Using the highly advanced Mako SmartRobtics system, including 3D CT-based technology, surgeons are able to create a patient-specific surgical plan based on their unique anatomy. This enables the surgeon to have a more predictable and precise surgical experience to optimize implant placement. The Mako system reduces the risk of soft tissue injury during the procedure, resulting in less post-operative pain.

 

Fatima Hospital was also the first hospital in this area to offer robot-assisted spine surgery.

 

Dr. Michael C. Mariorenzi, a member of the division of orthopedics, performed the first procedures. He and Dr. Peter Pizzarello are specialty-trained and certified in the use of the Mako technology. They are both affiliated with Orhtopedic Associates in Cranston. Additional surgeons are expected to join them.  

 

“We are very excited about this technology at Fatima and CharterCARE and are pleased to make it available to our patients,” said Dr. Mariorenzi. “This is an excellent tool for surgeons to help improve outcomes for patients undergoing joint replacement.” Having used multiple robotic systems in the past, he added that this platform is superior to other navigation systems. Mariorenzi emphasized the ability to form a customized surgical plan with improved surgical precision.

 

The procedure is done on an outpatient basis, but patients have the option of an overnight stay if they are not comfortable going home on the same day.

 

Total knee replacements in the United States are expected to increase by close to 200% by 2030, yet studies have shown that approximately 20% of patients are dissatisfied after conventional surgery.
